How important is a diode on a relay coil?

Diodes are important to keep the current in a circuit going in only one direction. Without a diode at each end of the coil, current might race back and forth across it which would make the voltage pulse get bigger (and so would its energy). A stable voltage that pulses gently and regularly is needed for accurate signaling. If we want to signal with wire coils, they need diodes on both ends.”
In other words, they are somewhat important because without them, your relay coil will be susceptible to fluctuations– making a signal unreliable.


Is negative spike suppression same as diode suppression on a relay?

Yes. Negative spike suppression is a form of diode suppression on a relay circuit. It means that any potential spikes are going to be reduced by the action of the diode. To combine these two, it will act as some kind of conduit between the positive and negative side so it can protect against voltage feedback loops from occurring when there’s an electrostatic discharge or power outage in-between the current and voltage channels in your electrical system. DRV8171s are available in the 10A 2 Ma range and if used with an appropriate heat sink or flash can protect against up to 160A of current (due to their small form).

Should i use a diode relay on halo lights?

Yes, because a diode relay ensures the halo lights are on when your headlights are off. A diode is just an electronic device that only lets current flow in one direction and it blocks the other way or direction. A standard vehicle will usually have a negative side which accumulates voltage from the alternator to power such things as headlights, taillights, etc. and also another positive wire which supplies voltage to items like radios, door locks, dome lights… Halo lights need regular 12v but won’t get any power through the converter it’s connected to if the vehicle’s headlight switch isn’t turned on–meaning if you don’t want them they’ll be off at all times and you have non active halo.
